Counter the Effects of Time

Unfortunately, there is a physically destructive nature of time and environmental elements on your VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, and Mini DV video tapes. Being that tape based media is made up of magnetic particles glued to a fine layer of tape it is susceptible to many damaging factors of which DVD disks are not.

Humidity and temperature changes over time cause the fine layer of glue on the roll of tape to adhere less and less. Magnetic fields can also play a destructive role found in consumer electronics around the home. This will cause the magnetic particles which produce the picture to shift within the tape and create tracking lines or wavy video footage.

The average total lifespan of any tape based media is approximately 20 years with degradation or deterioration beginning frequently in as little as 5 years. When the tape is in an advanced stage of degradation the process is accelerated. This is why it is so important to transfer your videos immediately and retain all of the quality they currently possess!
